Turmeric Today: The Health Benefits and Uses in the Kitchen

Curry Dessert Events Farmers Market Garlic Herbs Potlucks Recipe Spices Turmeric WillYUM Kitchen

When listing spices off of the top of their heads, usually it takes a good while before people get around to turmeric- but it shouldn't be that way! Turmeric is a staple of cuisines all around the world, from India to North Africa and even to England; not to mention the multitude of healing effects it can have! Turmeric is well known as having anti-inflammatory properties and positive effects on heart health, and in 250 BC, it was used in India to combat the effects of poisoning. Today, turmeric is used in stews, as a healthy alternative to cornstarch, in curries, relishes, baked goods, and even in popcorn. It not only combats disease and makes food a beautiful deep yellow hue, but it also brings a complex, warm, and somewhat bitter flavor to a dish. It can be very well paired with such spices as cloves, ginger, onion, wasabi, and yellow mustard. For those who want to try turmeric but are unsure where to start, we recommend this seasoning blend for cod, cheese biscuits, or roasted cauliflower.

Ingredients (makes about 3 1/2 tbsp):

  • 1 1/2 tbsp WillYum Spice powdered Turmeric
  • 1 tbsp ground ginger
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • Pinch of WillYum Spice Notorious Flame

Blend ingredients and enjoy!
